Sunday School & Victoria Falls Video

ok, this is mostly an attempt at posting videos. One video shows a former student of mine leading some familiar Zambian Christian choruses with some Sunday School children. The second video is simply some footage of Victoria Falls....

Lusaka Crusade - 2006

This video is from a small crusade we put together in Lusaka back in 2006. The video does not show much of the crusade - simply shows the unity of the Lusaka churches that came together to worship our Lord.

Fluctuation

The chart to the left is a five year snap shot of the value of the Zambian Kwacha compared to the US Dollar. Most Americans have little concept of foreign exchange rate and the impact on missionaries. This chart is my attempt to explain how a missionary is impacted by such fluctuations.
Lets take for example, fuel. The current cost of 1 liter of diesel fuel is roughly 8,000 Kwacha. At todays exchange rate - it works out to be roughly $2.13 USD for 1 liter of diesel fuel or $8.10 per gallon. This same gallon of diesel fuel purchased in January of 2007 would be $ 6.90 USD - this represents a 15% change in the price of fuel within a couple months - not because of taxes, or inflation, or supply/demand - but simply because the value of the US Dollar has changed compared to the Zambian Kwacha. Many missionaries enter the foreign field not understanding the issue of foreign exchange rates. Unfortunately, I know too many men that have left the foreign mission field simply because the money they have is not enough to sustain their family.
Pray for stability!

2007 Graduating Class

North Star Bible Institute of 2007 - graduating class. These men have spent three full years intensely studying God's word. These men will now take their knowledge and understanding of God and begin to testify, preach, & minister throughout different areas of Zambia.

I was privileged to instruct some of these guys for 4-5 terms of study. In my estimation, this graduating class has some men of faith with great c
haracter and Christian integrity. Praise the LORD for men willing to put aside some attractions of this world and seek a deeper relationship with God! As an instructor, my cup overflows whenever I see my students overcome adversity and accomplish their goals with fervor and intensified dedication to God - praise the LORD!

Container #3

Praise the LORD! Another container is on its way to Zambia, Africa! Although it will take some 2 months to actually arrive in Zambia and be offloaded - we rejoice in knowing it is now on the way! The members of Faith Baptist in Tacoma, Washington - have sacrificed and done so much so the people of Zambia could receive God's word! The people at BEAMS in Mississippi have worked hard to fill this container and set straight all the logistics to make this a successful voyage. I thank the Lord for their labor of love! The container is filled to its maximum weight of 44,000 lbs - included is:
- French Bibles

- English New Testaments
- Sunday School Materials
- Medical Supplies
- Toys
- Sporting Equipment

Please pray the container arrives in a timely manner without any damage/loss to its contents and during a week in Zambia when the rains are slow! I will be back in Zambia on January 17th and hope to help in the offloading of this container.

...for such is the kingdom of God

(Mark 10:13-16) And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. {14} But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. {15} Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. {16} And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. [KJV]

Anyone want to help bring the little children unto Jesus?

getting closer!!

I did it! Yikes - it took some time in prayer and meditation but I finally hit the "book it" button this morning. I now own a one-way ticket from John F Kennedy airport to the capital city of Zambia! I will leave NYC at 10:30 pm on January 15th and arrive in Lusaka on January 17th at 6:50 am.

Please pray for the following:
1 - to wrap up a million loose ends before the end of the year
2 - to see more churches get on board and excited about what God is doing in Africa
3 - for the Lord to provide more labourers for the harvest
4 - for the Lord Jesus Christ to be lifted up in every aspect!

noble

This past Sunday was another great time on the deputation trail. Originally I was scheduled to preach at a church in Columbia, Mississippi on Sunday morning - on Saturday the pastor contacted me and I was notified he needed to reschedule. Just a week earlier I had met a pastor that wanted me in his church but I just didn't have time on the schedule - I called and he quickly changed plans so I could come and preach at his church! Praise the LORD!! The name of the church on Sunday morning is called Berean Baptist Church - and as the Bible states, the Bereans were noble. This church was a true blessing - not only did the pastor go out of his way to allow me in but the church welcomed me with open arms! It certainly is a humbling experience to be a part of churches that go out of their way because of the love for what God is doing in and around the world!

The King is coming

Yesterday I traveled to Jackson, Mississippi to present the work in Zambia and share what God is doing in Africa! The preacher allowed me to show my video as well as speak to the people for a few minutes. This little church (Fellowship Baptist) has so many missionaries that come in that they no longer allow them the full Sunday evening service - the Pastor was telling me he was rarely getting to preach to his own people on Sunday nights... obviously you can see the missions heart this church has!

The preacher spoke on a passage having to do with king David returning to his thrown... but he made reference/application how King Jesus will return to His thrown - a good reminder to live godly and always be watc
hing and waiting!

BEAMS

Bible Education and Missionary Service (BEAMS). I am staying at a facility in Mississippi that specializes in getting hard cover KJV bibles to missionaries free of charge around the world. The campus has a warehouse, office building, and prophets chamber. Dr. Freret has allowed me to use the free housing here in Gulfport while I preach at various churches in the area.

The last two days groups came to the campus to help us pack up Thai Bibles to be sent to two different missionaries in Thailand. What a blessing!!! This ministry is focused on getting God's word to people around the world that would otherwise not have a copy of Scripture for themselves.

Please pray for this ministry - this year the BEAMS team will send over 100,000 Bibles around the world! Kafulafuta Baptist Mission has been the recipient of thousands of these Bibles over the last few years.

Savannah

This last week myself and another man from FBBC drove to Savannah, Georgia to attend the IAM conference. The conference is just a glorified missions conference focused primarily on sub-sahara Africa. From the beginning to the end the conference lifted up the Name of Jesus Christ! We heard from different preachers as they opened God's word and edified us in light of the command to go forth into all the world. Throughout the conference, many would reiterate the words - I just feel full and overwhelmed with all God has showed me! As David said - "my cup runneth over"!

We do appreciate all those that have prayed for our trip, the conference, and the Lord's hand upon everything. We encountered zero problems from beginning to end, had 3 people receive Christ, and made friends with many more of God's people --- all in all, a great time to rejoice! Praise God!!

International African Missions

Sunday, October 14th begins the second annual I AM conference. This year the conference will be held in Savannah, Georgia. Please pray for the following:

1 - Safety in travel as people are coming from all over to attend the conference
2 - The preaching of God's word to speak that all may hear
3 - The Lord of the harvest to call out more laborers
4 - Believers to be encouraged and edified

Brewster

Saturday afternoon, I was able to drive west to Brewster, Ohio. The pastor met me and we spent the evening with his family over a nice pizza dinner. It was evident early - this man is excited about what the Lord is doing throughout the world. As a missionary, it is refreshing to see local pastors get excited and make my mission field seem important to him and his church family.
Sunday morning - church started at 10:30 - we met in a small store front church with roughly 35-40 members. This church is only 5 months old and I had the privilege of being the first missionary to preach and present the work God has called me to!
We met after the service for lunch with the pastor, family, and some of the members - again, there was just a great excitement in the air to bring the name of Jesus Christ around the world and present the truths of God's word! I continue to be humbled by the love and great care received by so many of God's people . We so often talk about Christianity being a "family" of believers - but this experience on deputation has showed me the working of the body of Christ in a whole new manner - Praise the Lord for this group of faithful believers so willing to be used of God!

ya'all

My preaching experience now includes the states of Alabama and Kentucky.

I was blessed to be part of a Mission Conference in Decatur, Alabama. The conference itself was amazing - the people loved all over me and the other missionaries. I was blessed to stay with a host family that treated me with such kindness and liberty as well as meet so many people excited about the work of God in Zambia and throughout the utter most parts of the earth!

In Kentucky, the Lord allowed me to preach at a small church with a big vision. It
took me 8 hours to get to this little church for a Sunday night service - but it was well worth the drive. The pastor just wants to see people get saved and the Lord to be honored in it all. These people seemed intense as the word of God was being preached - it is always my prayer and desire to see more laborers called out into the global harvest!

I have given

Often times we hear missionaries or church leaders speaking of certain nations as open and closed to the gospel. If a nation is open it is legally willing to receive Christian missionaries. If a nation is closed it is illegal for a Christian missionary to enter with the purpose of evangelizing and church planting.

In Joshua 6 - we see the children of Israel facing a "closed" city. In fact, this city is large, fortified, and a formidable military opponent. Yet we see the Lord has commanded the city of Jericho to be destroyed and it will be done in a supernatural manner. The use of a great military force by Israel is unnecessary and in fact, the method employed by Israel is contrary to sound military advice.

With this said, Jesus has commanded us to go forth into all the world and preach the gospel. Is there such a thing as a "closed" nation when God has commanded us to go everywhere - even to the utter most parts of the earth? As a missionary to Africa - I know of areas that are hard to reach and closed to traditional methods of outreach. It is these areas I believe we can expect the supernatural power of God as seen at Jericho to again be prevalent. Three times in the book of Joshua the LORD speaks and says, "I have given".

It may take some imagination and courage - but I believe the Lord "has given" us a command to reach all people, nations, tongues, and tribes. In that giving of the command - our Lord has equipped us supernaturally to open that which is closed!

what are they among so many?

As believers, the Lord has commissioned us to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the entire world (Mark 16:15). It is easy to get frustrated by the immense task before the Church of God. Today's church seems weaker and more unfocused than ever. If that were not enough, statistically the job is too large and frankly impossible for the resources at hand. Billions of people still have yet to hear even the Name of Jesus Christ while those that do know that precious Name seem entangled by the allures of this world.

As the Master - Teacher, Jesus uses a lad that has only five barley loaves and two little fishes (John 6:9) to feed 5,000 men and prove a point so easily overlooked. As the Lord goes about this miracle Andrew jumps in with the question we all ask, "but what are they among so many?" It seems that is the point to the lesson --- little is much when God is in it. If I am honest with myself - Andrew's concerns are my own concerns even today. Most Christians would say - yes, lets win the world and go to the utter most parts of the earth... but what can I do among so many??? How can we make a righteous impact on this world?? We are so few, and they are so many...

By the end of this lesson, at least 5,000 men were fed and there are now 12 extra baskets of food. In predictable and anticlimactic manner Jesus says, "gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost." Would to God the church would get serious for just one generation and seek to feed the world with the only food that will not leave them hungering and thirsting any longer - the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:

I am posting the video I show at most churches as I travel around the country. The purpose of the video is to give a flavor for Zambia, the work going on, the blessings the Lord has poured out, and the labor we are still a part of.

I am still hoping/praying to return to Zambia in early 2008. For that to happen, the Lord will need to do things that are way past my ability. Although this deputation process is frustrating, I do look forward to some day looking back and seeing the mighty hand of God in all of it. The video is a bit over 9 minutes long. I would love your constructive feedback?

Burundi update/request

I received an email from Leonard Bwalya - one of the men in Burundi. So far the two men have had the pleasure of leading around 10-15 people to Christ - they continue to teach basic Bible lessons with the hope of laying a foundation (Matt 7:24) that will stay secure when the rains come and the winds blow.

Leonard is asking us to prayer for some problems they are having with the immigration department. It appears the visas Michael and Leonard are using need to be validated and they are without the proper forms. I am unsure of all the details but these types of things are common in Africa.

Just to give you an idea of where they are - Leonard mentioned there is an open-pit close to the church that has over 1000 dead bodies. This nation has been riddled with war, corruption, and neglect for many years. The greatest need these people have is not the UN or outside help but rather heavenly help - if righteousness truly does exalt a nation - the only hope the nations of the world have is the transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Lift up your eyes

The fields appear to be white unto harvest - this year's Bible conference at Kafulafuta resulted in an amazing moving of the Holy Ghost:

1992 children registered for VBS
7942 adults registered for Bible conference
122 churches represented
348 adults making professions of faith
767 children making professions of faith
127 people baptized

Praise the Lord for His grace and mercy, love and kindness, redemption and sacrifice - To God be the Glory!!

Vacation Bible School

Every year in August, Kafulafuta Baptist Mission hosts a week long VBS/Bible Conference. This event draws as many as 2,000 children and sometimes more than 5,000 adults.

In 2007, there were just a little bit more than 1,900 children in attendance. I have received reports stating some 300 children received Christ and made a profession of faith. This is obviously a time of great excitement and rejoicing as our Lord brings about a true work of grace and salvation!

Please continue praying for the messages being preached, the worship being offered, and the presence of God being sought.

Burundi, Africa

Two friends and co-laborers will be departing August 15th for a short trip to Burundi, Africa. This trip will take them from Luanshya to Mpika, from Mpika to Mpulungu - from there the two men will board a ship. The ship will take them across Lake Tanganyika allowing them to surpass much of Tanzania and arrive directly on the shores of Burundi.

This is a nation that has experienced many difficulties politically in the last several years. The spiritual condition of this nation is compromised of a large group of Roman catholics, a large group of Indigenous believers, and a small group of Bible believers.

I ask you to pray for the following (2 Thes 3:1-2):
1 - Word of the Lord may have free course
2 - God's word not return void and allow Christ to be glorified
3 - These men would be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men
4 - Faith would abound as a result

The purpose of this trip is to begin a small church or preaching point. This visit will hopefully lead to the salvation of many as well as future trips that will in turn reach more and train more - for the Glory of our great God and King!

Old Testament Zambia

Old Testament Scripture speaks of stoning a person if:
  • they "give any seed unto Molech" (Lev 20:2)
  • have a familiar spirit or that is a wizard (Lev 20:27)
  • they blaspheme the name of the LORD or curse (Lev 24:16)
  • they break the Sabbath (Num 15:35)
  • they entice others to fall away from the true God and serve idols (Deut 13:10)
  • they serve other gods and worship either the sun, moon, or any host of heaven (Deut 17:3-5)
  • they have a stubborn or rebellious son (Deut 21:18-21)
  • they play the whore (Deut 22:21)
Of course, Scripture does say there should be two or three witnesses before someone can be put to death (Deut 17:6). The witnesses are to begin the stoning and the rest of the congregation must join in. [due process] In Zambia, this system of justice (although not officially ordained) continues to be upheld even for such "minor" crimes as that of stealing.

By Times Reporter (Aug 7, 2007)

AN instant justice mob in Lusaka’s Ng’ombe township on Tuesday night stoned to death a suspected thief after he allegedly attempted to steal from a house.
The mob stripped the suspect of his clothes before descending on him using big stones, killing him on the spot.
By the time police arrived at the scene, the man had already died and the mob almost vented their anger on officers for stopping them from stoning the suspect.
Eyewitnesses said the body of the deceased was later taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) where it was confirmed dead.
Early last week, two people died after being stabbed to death by unknown people in the same township.
The recent Ng’ombe attacks are attributed to the absence of a police post in the area, which was destroyed by riotous residents after police killed two teenagers last year.
Meanwhile, in the continued effort to clamp down on criminals, police between Monday and yesterday morning arrested over 200 people for loitering from vario
us townships.

deal thy bread to the hungry

Taken in the South Luangwa Valley last year as we visited the Bisa tribe for the second time - this little boy was sick and dealing with malnutrition. Not realizing his own health condition and likely never having traveled more than a few kilometers from home - this little boy remains quite happy despite the "unfair" circumstances of his life.
Isaiah speaks of dealing bread to the hungry and covering the naked (Isa 58:7) - I realize "social" helps are not the primary function of a missionary, but honestly - how dwelleth the love of God in me if I am not moved to action by such a child.

Growth amidst sickness

Christianity has continued to grow in Africa amid an AIDS pandemic. More than 70 percent of all people infected with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa, where Zambia is located. More than 15 million Africans have died from AIDS, according to UNAIDS.

The growth rate of Christianity in Africa is now 2.36 percent a year, second only to the growth rate in Asia, according to David Barrett's "Annual Statistical Table on Global Mission." (Taken from The Birmingham News - www.alnews.com)

Chipata - people

Chipata is considered the gateway to the Eastern Province and the South Luangwa Valley. The Eastern Province has a population of more than 1.3 million people while the city of Chipata has roughly 75,000 inhabitants. Zambia still is a nation that has the majority of its people living outside the urban areas.
In order to reach these people with the gospel message, efforts will be made to venture away from Chipata central in order to locate villages and towns that have yet to hear the name of Jesus Christ.
Chipata is a developing town. I am praying on whether to start a new Bible Institute/mission station in Chipata modeled after the work at Kafulafuta. A second option is to possibly move out deeper into the bush not necessarily building a mission station but beginning some preaching/teaching points. This option is likely less expensive but more likely to falter over the years. Depending on mission philosophy, both options have pros and cons.

Heading East

Appears the deputation trail is taking me from one end of the States to the other. After a great time in the Pacific Northwest, I am now traveling to Massachusetts to preach at a church as well as spend some time with family.
Romans 15:20 has continually been on my mind. To preach the gospel where Christ has not been named - just seems the natural and almost singular responsibility of the missionary. More and more the Lord seems to be showing me the absolute necessity of going places that are in true need of hearing the gospel. Let me clarify, everyone needs to hear - realize, so many people have the ability to hear, they just choose to ignore. My desire is to go places where they don't have the choice to receive or reject because the gospel has never been a choice... and I speak this to my shame.

Portland, Oregon

In driving from Bend to Portland I has to pass through the Mt. Hood National Park - wow, breathtaking. A nice secondary of this trip has been the diversity of God's creation and how glorious His handiwork truly is! Often I found myself simply in awe and worshipping the Lord for His amazing artistic glory!
The Greater Portland Baptist Church rolled out the red carpet for me. This is the last church I will visit on this trip to the Pacific Northwest. I must say, all of the churches treated me great but the Pastor and this church family went over the top. After the service on Wednesday night, I spent roughly 45-60 minutes talking with church members and feeling excited about all the Lord is going to do!
I would say this is the beginning of my deputation experience. I tried to enter this phase of my mission work with the desire to encourage and challenge believers to a greater walk with the Lord and a great passion for the unreached nations of this world. I am not sure if I accomplished that goal, but I do believe the Lord has stirred some hearts and hopefully awakened the church! Praise the LORD - I look forward to doing more and going further for the gospel and the Name of Jesus Christ!

Bend, Oregon

Sunday night preached at a small church attempting to do big things. The church is leasing but has its eyes on the future with the desire to purchase its own land and building. Pastor Peil has a true desire to see this town come to Christ and is doing a fine job at training his people and reaching his community.
In meeting with a few of the members, there is a true sense of God's righteousness and a desire to follow the Lord. Again, I am impressed with how the Lord uses smaller churches to accomplish so much of His purpose! It is easy to think the mega-church is where the Lord will work since there are so many resources available - however, this trip and especially this church has proven to me just the opposite.
As Paul would teach, the body of Christ is diverse and each of the members has a true and distinct purpose. None of us function well without the other!

Pasco, WA

Wednesday I traveled from Seattle to Pasco. The trip had me cross through the mountains and drive through the desert. I went from 68 degree temps to 96 degree temps - quite a change!
Riverview Baptist Church was a lot of fun! This church has a lot going on. My Wednesday schedule went something like this: preached 10-15 minutes to the Spanish church, preached 10-15 minutes to the Korean church, preached 10-15 minutes to the public school teens, and finally preached 20 minutes to the adult service! WOW - what a blessing to be involved in so many different ministries in so short a period!
The next morning the Pastor (Dr. John Paisely) invited me back to preach on the radio. Preaching on the radio was quite a thrill for me - just knowing that God's word is being broadcast for thousands to hear... very fun! For many years now the church has owned and operated a local radio station. In the last few years, they have been helping missionaries set up radio stations on the foreign field. It is possible this church might even come to Zambia to help set up a new station in the Eastern Province!! Praise the LORD!!

Marysville, WA

Sunday PM - services started at 7 pm at Northwest Baptist Church on Father's day. I met the pastor for dinner before the service to get to know and hear about his ministry as well as introduce where the Lord is directing me. His church is a growing group of believers eager to attempt great things for God.
The Sunday night service is my favorite time to preach. People seem more relaxed and ready to receive the word of God. After the service, no one was in a hurry to leave but many people stayed around to talk about the message and encourage each other. A huge highlight to this particular service involved a young lady coming forward and receiving Christ as Lord and Saviour. Always fun to be part of!!
This month long trip to the Pacific Northwest has allowed me to come into contact with so many people. I honestly count it a huge privildge to open God's word and allow the Spirit of God to inspire and convince believers to take that next step of faith - To God be the Glory!

Sunday, June 17, 2007

Fircrest, WA

Sunday AM - Liberty Baptist Church. Had a good meeting and believed the Lord used me to encourage some people. The Pastor really has a love for his people and doing a fine job of Biblically teaching. Today's message was from Luke 15 - the prodigal son's relationship with his father.
This church has just recently taken on a new missionary to Zambia - always interesting to find out others are going to Zambia. When I am in Zambia, it does not appear there are many missionaries doing much but the truth is the Lord does have His people working hard throughout the nation to evangelize and teach God's truth!

Friday, June 15, 2007

Arlington, WA

Although most churches do not have services on Thursday, last night I was able to visit Fellowship Baptist Church. The church has been in existence for 18 years and has a small but strong group of believers attending. It continues to amaze me how much the Lord does with these little churches. The walls of this little church were lined with posters of missionaries that they support and pray for throughout the world. The hymn says, "little is much when God is in it" and the Lord has proved that over to me again!
This tour of the Pacific Northwest has allowed me to meet so many steadfast and real Christians. I look forward to seeing the Lord use Pastor Stiff as he continues to faithfully preach and encourage his church to walk in righteousness and pursue godliness!

Thursday, June 14, 2007

Bellingham, WA

The Wednesday evening service started about 7 - the pastor, his family and one other family had arrived. I was a bit worried it would be a small crowd. However, within the next 10 - 15 minutes another 20 or so people had wandered through the doors. It was a great service - the pastor has an amazing zeal and love for God.
Just recently his church went through some difficult times that did leave a scar but did strengthen the body as a whole. Amazing how those two opposites can actually work in unison! After the service was over, the pastor asked all the church members to stay behind and with a prayer partner spend some time with the Lord. I enjoy seeing how the Lord uses each pastor in different ways. The body of Christ truly is diverse!!
The pastor took me back to his house after the service and spent a couple hours just talking with me and giving me names and numbers of area pastors he think could help me reach Africa. It certainly is exciting when a man that hardly knows me is willing to put his name on the line in order for me to accomplish a piece of the Great Commission - To God be the Glory!!

Spokane, WA

I left Saturday for a 5 hour drive to Spokane from Seattle. The drive, although rainy, was quite scenic. I took I90 through the mountains all the way to Spokane - in that almost 300 miles of travel the landscape transforms from mountains to rolling hills to flat farm land - it was great preparation for weekend!

I had the priviledge of preaching God's word at 2 different churches on Sunday. Sunday morning went well - the church family was small but truly a people seeking the Lord. The Pastor has an ambitious spirit and truly desires to see revival come to this area of the country. Sunday evening was lots of fun. It was the type of church that a person immediately feels welcome. I was given the entire service to share the ministry in Zambia as well as preach from God's word. Again, the Lord blessed and many people came to the altar searching and asking the Lord to somehow use them in the Great Commission plan of reconciling mankind to the Father.

In both of these churches I met people that are just ordinary believers but that truly want to serve the Lord with all their heart! It certainly brings joy and satisfaction in life to be labouring in such a way that has eternal ramifications --- to God be the glory!

Astoria, Oregon

Travel seems to be my life for the month of June. I am quite pleased to have a full preaching schedule but I am looking to travel many miles in the next few weeks. Fortunately, I have met some great people on the adventure...

My first move away from the Tacoma/Seattle area led me to Astoria - named the "San Francisco of Oregon" - its likeness comes through windy roads and amazingly steep hills. I was permitted to preach at Bayview Baptist Church in which the Lord blessed and many hearts were touched. I believe this church will pray for me and the work in Africa as well as possibly make the trip and get involved in the work! The Pastor set me up to stay at a members house - turned out to be a wonderful situation. The homeowners (Gary and Paula) were very hospitable and went out of their way to accommodate me. This family not only took care of me but took me on a tour of one of America's quaintest areas to live!

June 1st - June 19th: Tacoma, Washington

Over the next couple weeks, I will be traveling to Tacoma, Washington. The purpose of this trip is to meet with other Christian believers with the hope of finding some that will pray and support the work God has called me to in Zambia. This trip currently has no itinerary - I am honestly leaving in less than 24 hours without knowing where I will be preaching or what to expect. I do know one thing - my Lord owns a cattle on a thousand hills, every beast of the forest is His, the fowls of the mountains are His, and the wild beasts of the field are His. Knowing that God has control over every penny in this world certainly relieves my anxiety and actually provides comfort. If everything is already His, He truly has need of nothing - now I can simply enjoy my Lord while I give thanks and call upon Him.
Please continue to pray for this trip. I look forward to being used of God as I enter and attempt to minister to the real needs of God's people. At the same time, I do look forward to seeing my Lord open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing with hardly enough room to receive it! Praise the LORD.

Faith and Works

The cry against works based religion has been so loud and often, it is instinctual to condemn those that teach us to 'work' for anything in Christianity. By looking at Ephesians 2:8-9 and Titus 3:3-5 it is easy to come to the conclusion that our own works have nothing to do with our salvation and that it is all God! However, that is not the end of the story as we know 'works' are not wrong if done in faith. It appears much of Christendom has taken 'liberty' to remove the required works that should occur in the true believer of Jesus Christ.
This thinking stems from my reading of Titus. From the start of this small epistle, Paul briskly rebukes those that "profess to know God but in works deny him." Paul goes on to explain the Christian life should: 1) extol a pattern of good works (2:7), 2) encourage people zealous of good works (2:14), and 3) exercise a life style that maintains good works (3:8).
In fact, the very passage we quote to say works are not necessary later is followed by insisting the believer is 'created in Christ Jesus unto good works" (Ephesians 2:10). How are we to actually 'work' as Christians? Lets simply take a look at one section of this small book...

Pattern of good works:
a. in doctrine
i. showing uncorruptness
ii. showing gravity
iii. showing sincerity

b. in sound speech
i. that cannot be condemned
ii. that others may be ashamed

c. in labouring
i. showing forth loyalty
ii. not speaking foolishly
iii. not stealing
iv. showing good fidelity

This is not even a complete list of the small section 'pattern of good works'. For a people that are saved by grace it appears we so often do not show forth the grace that has saved us. It is more likely most 'Christians' line up with professing to know God but don't really know the God of the Bible. Let us not use the grace of God for an occasion to the flesh but may we truly seek the God of the Bible and live a life that proves the grace of God is in us!

Samuel Richard Schiano

This morning at 3 am, my sister delivered a healthy baby boy into this world! Both mother and child seem to be doing well. Although my sister is a couple weeks early in her delivery, there were no complications. He came into this world at 6 lbs 8 ounces and has been described as hairy. My sister said he has not cried yet and seems to just be as happy as can be. It certainly is exciting!!! Praise the LORD!
I look forward to meeting my new little nephew. Obviously his name is significant to us. My sister and brother in law decided to honor my father by giving their second born child his middle name. It appears my brother in law is relieved - he was a bit concerned the child was going to be a girl. He was not quite sure how to deal with those pesty teenage years when all the boys would be coming around. Guess he wont need to worry about that, at least for a while...

A good start

This past week was the beginning of 'deputation' for me. The process started about 1,000 miles from home in Kansas City. This was not a process I was particularly looking forward to but one I do see the benefits of. After just one week, I honestly can say I have learned some things about God. It was exhilarating to see the Lord provide in the unexpected - often we talk about Jeremiah 33:3 but seldom do many of us have experiences that match our understanding of that verse.
I was able to meet with a some pastors over the few days in Kansas City. Over the last few years, many people from the Kansas City area have visited the work in Zambia. I still remain friends with many but never have had the opportunity to visit the mid-west. My first trip out was not only a good reunion of friendships but also an exciting time of Christian fellowship. There seems to be a real bond that acts like a strong cohesive for those that have visited Kafulafuta and preached the gospel in the land of Africa.

45,247

2007 has been a whirlwind event - so far, with just 3 months into the new year, I have traveled 45,247 air miles. I woke up the other night, looked around the room, and actually paused for a few seconds to figure out where I was!
Zambia in January - just a short trip to show some Americans Kafulafuta and the ministry in Zambia.
China in February - a two week trip that allowed us to teach/preach at a conference as well as encourage some folks through a Bible study.
Honduras in March - another two week trip that included a weekend with the kids along with a week long spiritual emphasis week.
Through this all, the Lord continues to teach me how large and diverse the body of Christ truly is. While in China, I met people from Russia, Mongolia, Bolivia, Tanzania, Chad, Zambia, Angola, Malawi, United States, Dominican, and others... When it came time to worship, I could only think of Revelation 5 where every kindred, tongue, people, and nation worship before the Lamb of God - it was actually quite an experience. It is very easy to fall into the Elijah rut, believing only my type of Christianity is the right way and everyone else has fallen into worldliness.
I look forward to that soon coming day when our faith shall be sight. The mass of humanity will bow and in perfect unison, worship our Great God and Saviour! In a world of darkness and foolishness, there is much to look forward too!!

Honduras 2007

Retreat at Camp Bagope

There were roughly 40 students from grades 9 through 12 that attended the weekend long retreat. The weekend consisted of many games & activities designed to bring about team spirit and unification as well as point to the theme "more than conquerors". Four messages were preached over the weekend - from what we could tell, two young men came to Christ and possibly one young man feels called to preach. Many other testimonies were given concerning living a life that shows Jesus in everything. Certainly is exciting to be a part of what the Lord is doing in the hearts of people all around the world - I realize it is not in me to change hearts and transform lives, but the Lord does allow me to be a mouth piece. Over the last couple months I have had the privilege of preaching and teaching God's word all over the world and remain fascinated and stunned at how the Lord works using simple people, like me!

Spiritual Emphasis Week

After the retreat, the school follows up with a spiritual emphasis week which includes 3 chapels for different age groups. I decided to preach/teach from the book of 1 John. A book that discusses much about knowing God in truth and how to truly understand if we are living a lie or actually living the Christian life. As with most teenagers, it is hard to know if the words spoken actually penetrated the peer pressure and clouded thinking so stereotypical in youth. I do believe the Lord again used these words to challenge all of us to truly examine ourselves to see if we are walking in the light or walking in the darkness.

Teachers, friends, family, and students

This was my second trip to Honduras. Last year I made some lasting friendships and was excited to renew those friendships as well as develop new one's. Pinares has a lot of new teachers on a year to year basis - this year, I was able to again develop new friendships. Students are always fun to see again - especially after one year, many have grown and mature right in front of our eyes. Family, the Laparra's may be one of the greatest families I know. Their love and hospitality is true and sincere. I honestly don't know of another family that I would want to spend so much time with. This all leads me to again realize the unity in the body of Christ extends far beyond my previous understanding.

Heading out again

This year has been quite busy - from Zambia, to China, and now to Honduras. I will be in Honduras working with brother Laparra from March 7th until the 22nd. The intent is to minister to the youth through a retreat getaway as well as through a spiritual emphasis week. Obviously this presents a great opportunity for the Lord to work mightily and truly transform lives.

I will travel with two others from my Church (Andy and his wife Darline). Andy and his wife will be teaching the Scripture to the elementary children while I minister to the high school age kids. We would ask you to pray for the Lord's hand to be upon the time we have in Honduras. We are never quite sure what to expect going into these things, but we do expect great things from God! This year has been off to a quick start - we truly desire just want to be a part of what the Lord is doing all over this world!

China

Our brief visit to China was quite overwhelming. China has a vast culture and although the country is officially non-religious, many stripes of 'religion' are found throughout. We spent time at prayer meetings, Bible studies, and our main focus - the winter retreat in Goungzhou. The trip was different than expected - very little time was spent with actual Chinese people. Instead, this mission was more designed to encourage the current foreign believers in China to help shine the Light of the Gospel through the darkness of this age.

One common thread spoken of throughout China is "luck". If there be one god everyone in China lives for it is the god of luck. We had the opportunity to visit the Guang Xiao Chan Si temple. In this temple people were lined up in front of all sorts of idols waving incense and distributing gifts at the feet of these deaf and dumb idols - all in an attempt to increase their "luck" for the upcoming year.

Surely the Christian Church in China is growing - but the difficulties and barriers ahead of it are quite monumental. It will only be through the power of God and the work of the Holy Spirit that this nation will turn from its wicked ways and embrace the Truth of Jesus Christ. Please pray for God's power to be evidenced in the life of believers in China!

pre-China

Friday February 16th, we leave the States for a long trip to China. After the mutliple trips to Zambia, I feel international travel has lost most of its excitement - however, there just seems to be something exciting about China. The trip itself is 25 actual travel hours. If you have done any international travel, you will know that such an amount of time is very draining. However, the excitement to teach and preach God's word in China should carry us for a while! Please pray for us as we desire to see our Lord Jesus glorified throughout ALL the world. Our requests:

  1. Word of the Lord may have free course.

  2. That we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men

  3. That we may encourage the believers in China and help to further the Kingdom of God

  4. Safety, good health, God speed, and on-time arrival w/luggage.

Back again

Just returned to the States after a short hiatus in Zambia. After 2 full days of travel, 3 full days in Zambia, and 2 full days getting back to the States - my clock is off just a bit! While in Zambia, I was able to show my guests many areas of Kafulafuta, Luanshya, Ndola, and Kitwe.
The visit included locating and visiting two orphanages. One orphanage (the Lupwa house) is a family style orphanage which consists of a small home with 8 children and a set of qualified parents to look after and train. The children are targeted as 'vulnerable' orphans and placed in the home. Some of the children come from abusive homes, dire sickness, or deceases parents. The second orphanage (Faith Children's Village) was more of an institutional orphanage. The homes were larger allowing for 16 children per home but not necessarily a parent or guardian to supervise. The larger institute has a goal of getting orphans off the street to at least give them a safe and secure chance to grow up.
In the midst of all the tours and travel, the visitors preached and taught to roughly 70-80 pastors visiting the mission. We had a great time of refreshment and encouragement around God's word as men were trained in Biblical leadership and challenged to never resign their God appointed post.
Upon entering Zambia, I was notified that one of my students (Joseph Mutaya) had just died. A couple days later we joined in the funeral service to honor Joseph's life and remember the vanity of the flesh. At only 34 years of age, Joseph was a powerful reminder of the vapour of this life.

Around the world...

The Lord has commanded us to proclaim the gospel to "all" the world. My original understanding of that verse opened my eyes to a personal need to reach into parts of the international world with the gospel. For the last few years, I have spent the majority of my time in Zambia, Africa. However, the Lord now seems to be mixing things up a bit. Here is my schedule for the next few weeks:
January 25th - February 2nd - Zambia, Africa
February 16th - February 28th - Guangzhou, China
March 8th - March 20th - Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Please pray for myself and team members as I travel extensively around the world to preach and teach God's word. There is no greater joy for me than to open the word of God and allow others to hear the eternal truths and receive the life changing power of love available through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Tacoma, Washington

I spent the last few days at a "Preachers delight" conference hosted by Pastor Mark Smith of Faith Baptist Church in Tacoma Washington. The conference is designed to unite and encourage fundamental baptist preachers in the Northwest United States. Preaching, worship, and fellowship has accomplished its intended purpose in charging many batteries and preparing many for the upcoming battles in 2007.
A family from Faith Baptist church (The Traucht Family) is interested in coming to Kafulafuta Baptist Mission. One of my goals for this trip was to speak with Tom and his family and understand their desires and get a feel for their heart. Tom is taking a short (5 day) trip to Zambia to survey and get a perspective of the work, culture, and adaptations that are needed. Tom has asked me to join him and his pastor as they travel to Zambia at the end of January. Although this trip is very short, I am excited for the opporutinity to re-unite with some dear friends and family in Zambia.
Please continue to pray for the work in Zambia, the teaching in the Bible Institute, my move to Chipata, and all the logistics and resources needed to accomplish this - of course, we never want to lose sight of why we even go - for the furtherance of the gospel and for the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ!!

New Year Resolutions

Every new year we stop to consider what changes we should make for the new year. Often times these changes have to do with health, finances, family, etc. In reviewing some resolutions Jonathon Edwards put together, I am trying to come to grips with the reality of true spiritual resolutions. Join me in examining just a few of Edward's resolution designed to make real change - change that is God centered and eternal in weight.
1 - “Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be most to the glory of God, and my own good, profit, and pleasure, in the whole of my duration; without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriads of ages hence.
2 - Resolved, to do whatever I think to be my duty, and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general.
3 - Resolved, never to lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can.
4 - Resolved, to live with all my might, while I do live.
5 - Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.
6 - Resolved, never to do anything out of revenge.
7 - Resolved, never to speak evil of any one, so that it shall tend to his dishonour, more or less, upon no account except for some real good.
8 - Resolved, to study the Scriptures so steadily, constantly, and frequently, as that I may find, and plainly perceive, myself to grow in the knowledge of the same.
9 - Resolved, to ask myself, at the end of every day, week, month, and year, wherein I could possibly, in any respect, have done better.
10 - Resolved, never to give over, nor in the least to slacken, my fight with my corruptions, however unsuccessful I may be.
11 - Resolved, always to do that which I shall wish I had done when I see others do it. Let there be something of benevolence in all that I speak.”
